A perspective from Oregon’s mid-Willamette Valley

An afternoon drive along Ellsworth Street

Written March 28th, 2026 by Hasso Hering

Here’s a windshield view of Ellsworth Street in Albany about 4 p.m. Saturday, March 28, 2026.

Having developed an aversion to schedules of all kinds, I try my best to avoid organized events like political demonstrations.

But on Saturday I had to drive through town, so it was hard to escape the afternoon “No Kings” rally along Ellsworth Street in Albany.

So, for lack of other, more original content on this evening in March, here is what this driver saw on mostly the right side of the street, from about Second Avenue to Fifth.

Traffic slowed a little, but the delays were minor.

Near the corner of Fourth Avenue.

Waving the flag.

People of different ages taking part.

My trip down Ellsworth happened at about 4, roughly two hours after the demonstration was to begin. I suspect the crowd had thinned by then, but it still seemed unusually large.

“No Kings?” As a slogan, that’s pretty bland.

Many of the signs people were holding up showed more imagination than that. (hh)

Good for all of them! “No Kings” is just the name of the protests that are ongoing. I’m glad the signs were more colorful and expansive! Thanks for the pictures.

  2. Mike says:

Great turnout. Love to see so many people getting involved in politics and interested in how we run our country.

  3. MarK says:

It happens every Friday. It’s disgusting. I hope they realize that they’re uniting many AGAINST their protests instead of for. I can’t for the life of me understand what they’re hoping to accomplish.

  4. RANDALL says:

    1960s leftovers. He’s not a king, he’s your daddy!

Be thankful your daddy got to Tehran before they were able to lob a nuke to the West Coast of the United States.

Hate him or love him, he is getting the job done.

Oh my God! I can’t stand you Trumpers, but I will stand it. Because I have to vote in the mid-terms.

    • Therese Storino Waterhous says:

Trump is in this to enrich himself and his family. From the wall street tips, to the oil grabs on behalf of the oil barons, this admin is in full cahoots with the other very rich of the world. They do not care a damn about any of us small folks. What we have in this administration is full on corruption.

I think the entire “No Kings” meme is ridiculous and yes, “bland”. Given the President of the past four years who actually implemented quite a bit of authoritarian law, including cracking down on free speech, it seems misplaced. But I do love that America enshrines free speech and so I celebrate the right of people to express their feelings. It looked like a nice day to do so.

    • Brad says:

And don’t forget that the previous president illegally tried to cancel student debt. I believe that the supreme court ruled against him at least once. Talk about a king! The only king worth following will be the center of attention next Sunday. Easter.

      • Brian D McMorris says:

No matter your religion, it is good to think about things bigger and more important than yourself. This is sorely missing in today’s era.

  6. Ducky says:

Thanks for showing us those who showed up. Millions of Americans are deeply concerned that the President is ignoring our Constitution and attempting to remove all remaining checks and balances on his power as if he intends on ruling by fiat like a king or a dictator. That’s what these protests are about. “No Kings” is simple and to the point.

  7. Ray Kopczynski says:

Strong KUDOs for all who attended! It shows “protesting” done the right way! As long as we continue to have the so-called leadership at the top levels, support for this kind of event will only contnue to grow!

Only caveat… While having lunch at Loafer’s, a very large drone was hovering outside & doing it’s thing. WHY? I was inside, but still flipped it a very well-deserved “bird” for spying on customers!

    • FRR says:

Glad you approve of the protests, Ray. I’m impressed.

On the other hand, giving a drone the “bird” while sitting in a restaurant (in public, that is) seems not a good look for someone who very often runs for City Council. The drone could have been a child’s toy. One flew over my house into my backyard at Christmastime. The mother of the boy commandeering the drone came by looking for the drone. No problem. Or, you may be right, and it may have been an ICE (read that as “Trump”) drone spying on the protest.

    • CatlessChildLady says:

Ray, that was the police drone! Lol

      • Ray Kopczynski says:

Maybe I could get an autographed copy? :-)

        • FRR says:

Autographed copy? Do you mean an autographed copy of picture the Albany Police Department’s drone took of you flipping the bird!!

SMALL TOWN PROTESTS ARE FUNNY…DOESN’T MAKE SENSE…BUT…WHEN OREGON IS 50 th FOR EDUCATION…IT ALL MAKES SENSE NOW….OH MY..POOR BOBBY & SALLY STILL CAN’T READ OR WRITE.

I applaud all the people who came out to protest the Trump Administration. That is so extremely sad that Trump supporters think Iran was going to nuke the West Coast or anywhere in the United States. First, it was impossible for Iran to do that. Second, that would have been suicide for Iran to do that, but it didn’t even have the capabilities to do that. Trump better end this war of choice very soon. This could easily turn into a World War. Russia and China are already sharing intelligence with Iran. Do you think they will sit idly by if Trump forces US Soldiers to invade Iran? Russia and China will certainly share even more with Iran if US Soldiers set foot on Iranian soil.
Did Trump ever serve in the military? No, he received five deferments. His Dad and his Grandfather never served in the military either. His sons and his grandkids have never served either. Wake up.

    • Brad says:

I wonder if FDR, Clinton, Obama or Biden ever served in the military? Did their lack of military experience stop them from initiating military action?

      • Zell says:

None of those four ever started wars for no reason. All four listened to top generals.

Trump was advised by top generals that Iran would do this with the Strait of Hormuz, but he ignored their warnings.

Also, a lot of Trumpers blame Biden for the withdrawal from Afghanistan, but Trump negotiated the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan, signing the formal agreement with the Taliban in February 2020. Biden had to adhere to this agreement.

      • FRR says:

FDR, the greatest president we have ever had, had polio which set in when he was in his 30s, I think. All 4 of his sons served in World War II right in the thick of some of the biggest battles.

      • FRR says:

Also, FDR was Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Navy from 1913 to 1920.

Forget the usual claptrap from the left. If you want to know what is so deeply, horribly wrong with Trump and especially his second administration, look up the writings, videos, etc, of real conservatives. Some examples:
    David Brooks
    David Frum
    George Will
    Michael Medved
    John Bolton

Many more, including current and former office holders:

    • MHanson says:

Spare me your advice. Thank you very much!! I can’t stand any of the “men” you mention. All are smug, mean, unfeeling, greedy, rich, money-grubbing Republicans who only care about their own. They want working class people to shut up and die quietly. After all, the immediate families of these men don’t need Social Security. So, they want to cripple it.

  12. HowlingCicada says:

My biggest personal issue with the Trump administration is the attack on “active” transportation and, indeed, every alternative to the car-dependent “stroad” hellscape of America found everywhere outside of a few walkable and bikeable areas.

For specifics on his actions, ask your favorite AI/search:
“What did Trump do to stifle active transportation?”

This is much more important than just some bike paths. The biggest factors impeding health and happiness in rich countries are probably (1) inactivity, (2) loss of independence by children and others caused by the lack of safe spaces to move around in public on one’s own power, and (3) the cumulative effects of both over a lifetime.

It will take a lot of work in different sectors to fix this. Trump seems determined to fight all of them. I think some of his motivation comes from a bunch of crackpot theories about “15-minute cities,” a badly thought-out and badly written-about concept that in reality threatens no one outside the car and fossil-fuel industries.

    I asked Google another question:
“What has RFK,Jr. done to promote active transportation?”
The answer was revealingly silly (except for the elites who spend a lot of time in airports).

  13. Mother of Two says:

I was there. We had three generations of women. It was my 74-year-old mother’s first protest, and mine. And no, we were NOT paid to be there. Nor are we “radical left lunatics.” We are educated and contribute to our society and our community. Everyone there Saturday was positive and peaceful. The only negativity came from Trumpers driving by flipping us off and yelling obscenities while we did one of the most American things you can do: protest your government.

    • Jody Obermeyer says:

You are spot on. The only angry and mean people were those who support the madman. It was peaceful and definitely positive. Thank you for your support!

  14. Bill Kapaun says:

Thank you everybody for keeping America the king free Republic it’s been for nearly 250 years. Donald Trump truly appreciates your efforts as do the rest of us US citizens.
