A word on the year’s end at hh-today

Written December 31st, 2020 by Hasso Hering

I don’t know if or when you will open this file, but it’s being published for New Year’s Eve. And if you have five minutes with nothing better to do, I invite you to click the video below.

So, as I think I said several times, hang in there and best wishes for the new year. (hh)

    Hasso,

Thank you for sharing all of your travels and insights.
When I started watching this, with a sinking heart, I thought you were going to tell us you were going to stop.
I am looking to forward to seeing your stories in the coming year.
    Happy New Years!

  6. John Dalen says:

Thank you for posting your musings about Albany. It is enjoyable for me to hear about things around town that generally are not priority news and in many cases simply help explain how things end up the way they do. Fond memories of growing up there. Take care and best wishes to you and your wife in 2021.

  7. Lou T says:

Thank you and Happy New Year! I read a lot of your work, watch some of your videos, especially if it involves the local railroads. I look forward to seeing more in 2021!

  8. Greg S says:

    Hasso,

Thank you for what you are doing with HH Today. I check in with it daily. Your site is right under the DH/GT site on my favorites list. It has been since you started. Best wishes for health and happiness in the coming year!

  9. J. Tibbs says:

I’ve always liked your stories. Been reading for way before 2013. Used to love your OP/ED articles way back in the 80’s…90’s. Wow, I’m old!
Happy New Year HH. May you have a healthy, joyous 2021.
    J. Tibbs

  11. Ray Kopczynski says:

Thank you for all that you do…! Some of us have definitely become addicted to your missives over the years. It’s one of the 1st things I look for each morning — to see if there’s a new one and/or the comments for same. Yes, 2021 has got to be better than 2020! :-)

  12. hmsiebrecht@comcast.net says:

I enjoy keeping up with your wanderings. I will occasionally pick up some news on HH Today, local articles are of interest. Thank you for keeping up with the City Council news. Happy New Year!

  13. SW says:

Your “little stories” are informative, amusing and sometimes enlightening. Thank you for sharing your stories and musings about our community. Happy New Year!

  14. Mike says:

I enjoy reading your discoveries. I should have called you when I discovered rats around my house and trapped 9 of the critters. Keep up the great musings and happy new year to you and Kathy. How are the boys? Mg

  15. Al Densmore says:

Thank you Haddon. I enjoy your adventures and observations!

  16. Lundy says:

Hasso, watching the video, one thing that struck me was how nice it was to hear your voice. Brought me back to our time at the D-H, when of course I heard it almost every day for 22 years. Your blog is a wonderful example of the kind of reporting and storytelling that is especially possible when unencumbered by a daily newspaper’s time-consuming requirement to report on the BBN — boring but necessary. The fun and useful information you dig up and share enriches and entertains readers. Thanks for all you do, and I’m looking forward to more of your work in 2021 and beyond. Happy new year!

  17. Oscar says:

    Happy New Year Hasso

  18. Russ Burchard says:

Hasso, I read every one of your stories here and enjoy all of them – just as I used to enjoy your editorials at the DH. Like you, I’m often curious about little things around town – and I frequently think, “I wonder if Hasso will do a story on that.” So keep up the good work, and keep having fun at it.

  19. Janice Mitchell says:

Happy New Year, and thanks for what you do at HH Today. I always enjoy your posts, and I’m glad you’re continuing in 2021. We all need a little good news!

  20. GregB says:

Thanks HH. I look at your blog every morning after I read the DH on line to see what ya have to say that day. I enjoy the local musings. And, Happy New Year. I think I am probably not the only person that has been around more than 7 decades that is saying, “what, how did it get to 2021 already”?

  21. Adam says:

Hasso, thank you for bringing us the other parts of life. Your observations bring reality to many subjects for our community to ponder. Journalism has many forms and yours is an informative perspective which I enjoy, respect, and am thankful for.

    Happy New Year

  22. Bill Higby says:

Hasso thank you so much for HH Today. You give perspective, might be different than news but your observations are interesting and provide a lot of information about our community. Thank you Hasso…keep it going.

  23. Lon Carlson says:

Thank you, Hasso. Happy New Year to you and your family too! –lon and Nina Carlson

  24. Patricia Eich says:

Hasso, Happy New Year from San Antonio where I’m visiting our daughter and family for the holidays. I enjoy your posts and it’s one of the first things I look for in the morning. Like Steven Smith I thought you were saying goodbye to all of us. Happily that was not the case. I enjoy your thoughts and comments. Wishing us all a better next year

  25. Chris Marston says:

HH, your stories about the oddities you encounter while riding your bike offer a unique perspective of life in our corner of the world. Thanks for living life and sharing your thoughts with us.

  26. Mike Patrick says:

You don’t need to change a thing or improve a bit! Your stories are perfect just the way they are Mr. Albany!

Happy New Year to you and yours!

  27. Lindell Johnson says:

Thank you so much for your interesting “stories.” I look forward to HH Today every day.
HAPPY NEW YEAR to you and Kathie.

  28. HowlingCicada says:

Thanks to you I know more about Albany than my home of Corvallis. Maybe I’m also beginning to care more about it.

  29. Rich Shea says:

Jan and I lived in Albany from 1978 to 1986, for 8 years and 34 years ago. We raised our children in Albany, Jan worked at Albany General Hospital and I at GAPS and Saint Mary’s School. These vignettes that you share daily bring me back to those days although I sometimes struggle to accurately recall the geography of these stories. In any case, I look forward to them every day as I think back to a wonderful chapter in our lives.

  30. Connie Nelson says:

I just want to add my wish for a Happy New Year to you. I have missed your editorials in the Democrat Herald since you left, and am thankful for what you are doing now. You are definitely an asset to this community. Thank you.

  31. Betty Burge Ferren says:

Happy New Year. I enjoy your missives immensely. They often answer my questions about something I have wondered about in Albany. You have the resources to verify certain things the rest of us don’t have access to. I appreciate that. Ever the newsman I guess. Keep up the good work.

  32. JD says:

HNY HH! You are a bright light in our community & having local “news” like the things you investigate I find much more interesting to me personally. Thank you for all you do!

  33. Steve says:

Thank you, Hasso. I must disagree…your posts are indeed news. You post a different perspective from the mainstream news and for that, I appreciate the posts. This last year has indeed been a challenge for everyone, my wish, like yours is for a much better 2021. Continue your travels, I look forward to what you find.

  34. john marble says:

    Oh my goodness, Hasso!
My worst fears were allayed when you finally got to the point of assuring me (and all of your loving readers) that you were NOT retiring, but intend to keep on bringing us small, thoughtful moments of life in our community.

It is difficult to be completely objective after a year like 2020. I hesitate to even make a list of our collective troubles. Still, I want to send everyone best wishes as we go forward. And of course, we will go forward.

  35. Andrea S says:

Happy New Year! Thank you for your stories. I am genuinely interested to read them and enjoy learning about Albany and other topics. Your articles often address questions I have, and prompt me to be more involved with Albany happenings than I would be otherwise.

  36. Tom Cutsforth says:

    Dear Hasso,
You are a treasure for this community we both share. Don’t ask why I say that; just accept that it is true. Glad to hear you are sticking around, at least for another year.

Now, when I call Tom Decker tomorrow to wish him a Happy New Year, I’ll have something substantial to say when he asks me, “What’s new, Cuts?”.

  37. Valerie Greenway says:

Happy New Year. I moved to Albany in 2017 and have found your content helpful for learning about the community and local concerns. I have searched your pages and found answers. Such as the story about the Bikman penthouse. Which I wondered about as I viewed it from the bridge. I am partial to the construction and development updates as I manage public road improvement projects.
I’m glad you plan to continue. I appreciate your effort and the information you share.

  38. CHEZZ says:

Hasso, thank you for your eyes and ears, your attentiveness to the news as well as the nuances. You bring more light into our world! You are my first read every day, and I know and appreciate more about our town each day. That is your gift to me. Thank you.

  39. Steve Engler says:

As a newcomer to Albany, I find your posts interesting and informative as I learn about my new community. Thank you for your “hobby” and please keep them coming.

  40. Robert D Stalick says:

Thanks for your insights into our community. The comments of your followers are a good story, too, I think. Best of the New Year to the entire Hering family.

  41. Nancy Strohlein says:

We second all the positive comments and yes, look forward to another year of your Albany wanderings and information!
    Nancy and Bill

  42. Tom Decker says:

Hasso: As a former Albanian (sp?), I very much enjoy your regular reporting and the video efforts. Keep them coming. Now, when Tom Cutsforth calls me today, I can assure him I already know what’s new in Albany. And I appreciate your plug for following regular news sources to get the full story. We need local newspapers more than ever.

  43. Suebee says:

    I check in every day!

Thanks Hasso….and here’s to a happier New Year!

  44. Dick Olsen says:

I saw you in formal shirt and tie and my first thought was ,as my good friend Lee Rohrbough might have said, “ Oh no, they’re flying off to Acapulco”. Thank God you’re staying and keeping us informed. Happy new year to you and Kathie.

  45. Dick Dykast says:

HH, even though I now live in South Carolina, your musings, postings and reporting provide a daily means for me to still see what is happening in the Albany community. I also enjoy reading through the reader responses. Sometimes, I’m even amused by the occasional curmudgeon posting. Glad to see that you will continue with the blog.

  46. David Ballard says:

Happy New Year. Thank you for sharing your hobby. Keep up the good work.

  47. Bill Kapaun says:

I appreciate what you do Hasso! So often the DH/GT carry your stories 2-4 days after you report. They really should pay you for their “intellectual plagiarism”.

  48. Kurt says:

Thank you Hasso for your blog. I appreciate it. Happy New Year to you too!

  49. Cheryl P says:

I don’t always agree with you, but I do respect your point of view.

  50. Allen Campbell says:

Thank you Mr. Hering. I have been here around Albany for almost 93 years and I learn something new or an answer to an old question each time I read one of your posts. As . Mr. Smith said, I was afraid you were writing a 30. Glad you will be keeping us up to date.
    .

  51. M. Richner says:

I also am a regular reader and fan. Like some of the other comments here, when I saw you in your Sunday best, I had a quick fear that you were going to announce giving it up. So very glad that’s not the case, because whether you define what you do as “not news,” I beg to differ, it’s simply a different sort of news. Most welcome too. All that bike riding will keep you healthy and fit for many years to come, such that your readers will be trailing along with you. Thank you.

  52. Kathe says:

Thank you! i love reading what you write about Albany! So happy New Year! And please keep writing.

  53. Teresa says:

I love your posts, i just seldom comment. Will do better in 2021.

  54. Stephen Rosenthal says:

Thanks for all that you do!

Happy reader here. Started reading when I moved here in 2018 and this site has helped me feel a bit connected to the things happening in the community.

For what it’s worth, I prefer to read articles rather than watch videos. It’s not always convenient to play something out loud and I don’t always have headphones. But it’s your site, so do what you enjoy! I’ll probably keep coming either way.

  55. Dave M says:

Thank you for your Pedal Powered Perspective of the Willamette Valley. Cheers to the New Year!

  56. thomas earl cordier says:

Thanks HH for your well written stories. My friend Al Nyman and I have discussed why we read it every day. Concluded–Your headline and language style is easily read and interesting–just pulls us in. Your blog is a throwback of comfortable prose in these troubling times. When folks ask me “what’s-up” in Albany; I quickly give hh-today.com

  57. Dan Murphy says:

Thank you Hasso for your work here. It is always most appreciated. Happy New Year to you!

  58. Steve Anderson says:

Many thanks Hasso for all your interesting posts over the years! I’ve lived here all my 65 years and It’s so enjoyable to follow along with your new local discoveries! Maybe I’ll catch you one of these days as I bicycle the local roads around town. Happy New Year !

  59. rmh says:

Thanks for all you do. You are a classic part of Albany.
