When darkness falls at 97321

After sunset Thursday in the parking of the Albany Post Office.

After sunset Tuesday in the parking lot of the Albany Post Office.

Albany this year has managed to light up the riverside Dave Clark Path and nearby Monteith Riverpark, so maybe now something could be done to pierce the darkness that descends on the parking lot of the Albany Post Office after the sun goes down.

A reader complained about the lack of lighting outside the post office. And yes, while the lobby and front door are brightly lit, if people go to check their boxes for mail at night they might want to bring a flashlight for the short walk from their cars and back..

That leaves the matter of the flag. Isn’t it supposed to be lighted if left up overnight?.

The lighting issue aside, I’m delighted to report that the last few times I tried it, the Albany office’s self-service kiosk has worked as it is supposed to. (I wrote about it when it wasn’t, some time ago.) So I didn’t know what to make this email Wednesday: “The self service kiosk in the Midwood Station has not been working fully for the past few weeks. I called them earlier today and asked if it was working, as it hadn’t been for the past few weeks. She replied, ‘I don’t know about last week, but it’s working now.’ Since I work less than a block from the station, I walked over only to find a printed notice taped to the screen ‘OUT OF SERVICE’!”

I thanked the person for letting me know but allowed that Midwood Station was probably off my beat. The answer came back promptly: “It’s in Brooklyn, NY. In my haste, I didn’t realize you’re from the West Coast. I was trying to find some website that might have info on each kiosk. If there is such a thing, it’s probably on some USPS website we have no access to.”

As for our lighting issue at the office for 97321, it might be easily fixed if only someone could get this fixture to come on: (hh)

This is the same post office that has boarded up all the windows inside the customer service area. They seem to have an issue with light. Pretty sure the employees are all vampires, so don’t hold your breath for that streetlight to be fixed.

That self serve kiosk has been broken for well over a year . Maybe 2 . I told them at least 10 times . The card reader doesn’t work at all . The lighting I’m sure is a federal issue not a city one . Maybe one day downtown can reclaim that space and the post office can move to a better accessible modern facility .

Where is the collective outrage? Chants of USA! USA! Today, July 27th, 2016, the Republican nominee for the Presidency openly called for a Communist nation to commit crimes against that very same country he would like to run. This is a crime folks. Treason.

I ask again. Where is the outrage?

    Darkness has fallen.

    • Anonymous says:

In linn county you won’t find much outrage unfortunately. People would defend trump if he said he was a communist himself. Rather than making an educated vote for a third party candidate people blindly vote republican no matter how dangerous your candidate may be. If some people were a little more open minded they might be able to see that

    • Bob Woods says:

Well, Russia hasn’t been a Communist country for 25 years, but I agree with your point about the darkness the Republicans’ are shoveling this year. It used to be “gloom and doom” but Trump has has turned it into outright fascism.

    • Al Nyman says:

Where is the crime. Per Hillary, the emails have nothing to do with national security.

I would not spend a dime to light up usps parking lot. that’s what night time does.

    • centrist says:

Lots of posturing for a maintenance issue with public safety connections. Whichever public entity “owns” it needs to either repair it or remove it

  5. Richard Vnnice says:

Flag etiquette dictates that when the US flag is flown after dark it must be illuminated. You would think that a federal facility would know this and make sure they comply.
