Much dust on a hot day
Driving into town this afternoon, I couldn’t help but notice this cloud of dust, as the video shows.
The grass seed harvest done, someone was disking or harrowing a plowed field just outside the Albany city limits off Oak Grove Drive, raising a billowing cloud. Near the end of a stifling hot day with the temperature in the 90s, the forecast included a chance of a thunderstorm. So maybe he was trying to get the work done before the storm broke.
Let’s remember that doing the day-to-day work of farming is a lot more onerous than enduring dust one or two summer days. And it’s worth pointing out that farm fields — and the practices needed to tend them and keep them productive — have been around in these parts for a century and a half, whereas most of the nearby subdivision houses where the dust settles on granite countertops have sprung up in just the last 20 years or so.
The farmers having to work in close proximity to new subdivisions didn’t ask for those developments. They had no significant role in matters such as drawing urban growth boundaries and pushing annexations through. (hh)
