Pot debate ends: Stores can stay

Written April 23rd, 2014 by Hasso Hering

Albany’s marijuana discussions may now be over for a while. At least that’s my hope after the city council Wednesday voted to allow two existing medical marijuana businesses to stay in existence. Councilors did so on a 3-3 tie, as expected, with Mayor Sharon Konopa casting the deciding vote.

Albany pot stores: The series continues

Written April 21st, 2014 by Hasso Hering

For the umpteenth time, the Albany City Council plowed the same ground Monday on the subject of medical marijuana dispensaries, which the legislature has authorized local governments to either ban for a year or control with “reasonable regulations.” The outcome, as far as anybody can be sure of anything in this shifting debate, is that […]

Albany dispensary ban loses, but …

Written April 9th, 2014 by Hasso Hering

Albany may get by without a one-year ban on medical marijuana dispensaries, but the city council is dragging out the decision for another couple of weeks. On Wednesday night, Mayor Sharon Konopa broke a 3-3 council deadlock and voted down a one-year city “moratorium” on allowing medical marijuana shops. But she vowed to ask for […]

Albany dispensaries? Suspense grows

Written April 7th, 2014 by Hasso Hering

The apparent reason: Councilor Bill Coburn (in the red shirt in the shot above) does not want to force Canna Kitchen out of business. A decision may be made at the city council’s regular meeting, which starts at 7:15 Wednesday […]

Linn County to join dispensary ban

Written March 21st, 2014 by Hasso Hering

Linn County, too, is preparing to jump on the local-government bandwagon of banning for a year the medical marijuana dispensaries the 2013 Oregon legislature had tried to allow.

Albany to act on marijuana store ban

Written March 21st, 2014 by Hasso Hering

The Albany City Council is wasting no time in its drive to ban, at least for a year, any medical marijuana stores within the city limits that might be authorized by the state. An ordinance imposing a one-year moratorium on dispensaries — through May 1, 2015 — is on the agendas of the council’s work […]

Forget pot dispensaries for now

Written March 7th, 2014 by Hasso Hering

You can forget about legal dispensaries of medical marijuana in Oregon for the foreseeable future — unless voters approve legalization of the weed in the form of an initiative this fall. The state Senate voted this morning, 28-2, to go along with changes the House had made in SB 1531.
