At the Albany Bottle Drop and others around the state, the fee for dropping off a bag of empties will change on Monday. Two people who contacted me about it don’t think that’s right.
The photo above reinforces my contention that one Bottle Drop in Albany is not enough for the demand being put on it by people trying to live up to Oregon’s bottle-and-can-deposit law.
Whether you remembered it or not, this year is the 50th anniversary of the passage of the Oregon Bottle Bill. And if the Albany Bottle Drop is any indication, Oregon’s deposit-and-redemption program for bottles and cans needs an upgrade.
Governor Brown’s “stay home, save lives” executive order, in effect since March 23, does not mention Oregon Bottle Bill redemption centers. Lots of people may see the general coronavirus shutdown as a good time to gather up all those empties and turn them in.
Oregon has expanded its “Bottle Bill” deposit law to include more containers, and I’ve been wondering whether the system to redeem the empties can handle the additional load.
Albany stores and customers can forget about using a central bottle and can redemption center yet this year. Following up on last week’s story about the Albany Bottle Drop, and more generally about the Oregon Bottle Bill, there’s something I’d like to amend.
