If you live in Albany and want the street in front of your house swept, you can get out a broom and shovel and sweep it yourself. Or you can check the schedule and make sure you don’t block the city’s sweeper when it comes around, like clockwork, at least once a month.

It’s not exactly Zuma Beach, let alone the French Riviera, but as an occasional swimming hole this spot on the Calapooia River upstream of the Queen Avenue bridge has its uses during the mid-valley summer. At least for a few people, as in this shot from June 30.

Once again, trains face budget hurdle

Back to trains for a moment, if you don’t mind. More specifically passenger rail. Once again, in advance of next year’s legislative session, there’s a question whether the Amtrak Cascades train service between Eugene and Portland will continue beyond June 2017.

What used to be Wendy’s restaurant on Albany’s Pacific Boulevard has been closed for a year and a half, and the property has turned into a showcase of landscaping neglect.

A big calamity, but this wasn’t it
This could have cost somebody his transportation. But it didn’t, proof that not all mishaps turn out to be calamities. I came across this scene on Albany’s Elm Street Saturday after taking a look at the aftermath of an actual calamity across town, the fire that destroyed the Burger King at Geary and 14th.
