The Albany City Council went round and round for a couple of hours Monday on the issue of regulating recreational marijuana sites. In the end the ordinance under discussion failed to advance, but the council will try again next month.


News for a gray day: Rain tax

The November rain is back, which reminds me: Albany’s rain tax, in the works for most of the past two years, now is set and will show up on city utility bills starting in March.

The Albany City Council could save itself time and trouble by relying on a mountain of state regulations regarding marijuana businesses. Instead, the council’s Monday agenda calls for action on a code amendment that the city staff believes would not survive a legal challenge.

Open for business? Well, not exactly, at least where marijuana is concerned. A day after Albany voters overwhelmingly repealed the city council’s ban on commerce in recreational pot, Mayor Sharon Konopa and the council majority appeared ready Wednesday to impose tight restrictions on where pot stores could open.

Closing a lane gets push-back

Because it calls for losing a lane on Queen Avenue westbound, Albany City Council members Rich Kellum and Bill Coburn are pushing back against a proposal by ODOT-Rail to add more gates at the Queen Avenue railroad crossing.
