So-called smart electric meters are coming to our houses and businesses in the mid-valley starting next month, whether anybody needs one or not.


Work upgrades trestle on P&W line

For weeks there’s been heavy construction on the Portland & Western’s long trestle bridge across the Calapooia River and its floodplain outside Albany. The work is upgrading and strengthening the structure and will probably make it last many decades more.


The cleanup never ends

The wasteland under the Pacific Boulevard viaduct is not exactly Albany’s garden spot. Vagrants have turned it into a dump where repeated cleanups have to be done.


Public art: What’ll it look like?

Albany is about to follow through on spending some money for public art. The plan is to invite artists to propose something — most likely a sculpture that would be placed on a patch of grass near the Lyon Street off-ramp from Highway 99.

A street that acts like a park

On a leisurely ride through South Albany this week, I came across a feature in the urban landscape I can’t remember seeing before. It’s this broad swath of parkland the width of a street and four blocks long, with a concrete path winding down the middle for walking or riding a bike.
